Zoo Island - by Tomas Rivera

Summary:
This is a story about a boy called Jose, he is a young immigrant worker who works in the fields all day and try’s to finds a way not to think about the long boring job he occupies himself by redirecting his thoughts. He does this by taking a census “count” of the population of the workers that work at the fields and the people that live on the land with him. Jose gathers his friends; Jitter and Hank in helping him take a census of the population of the people that are living on this land in their chicken coops. He feels that he has self-esteem and importance by making people identify the names of there family’s, and how many people there are in it. Jose one day goes on to compare the community of people next to his. In this comparison he finds out that typical living of the people of the town that he has compared in his community. They have many more public areas such as food, churches, stores and others of the type. He makes a note of the fact that his father “Pa as called in the book” feels that people of the other towns come in and make fun of his community because they have low standard of living. The census that Jose, Jitter, and Hank took; gave the poor people of the village a logic of power and the understanding that they have more people in there community then did the wealthier and more privileged people in the other town. In a conversation with Don Simon he gave them the name for there town “Zoo Island.” The group of eighty-eight people suggested they name there community “Zoo Island” they named it Zoo Island because just like a zoo that had a wide range of various types of animals, well they had a range of various types humans not animals, all special in their own ways.

Theme:

The theme of the story was how Jose and his friends came up with the idea of taking a census in their village; they found out that they had more people in their village than the more fortunate people living in the other towns. It made them feel as if they had a special identity and qualities. Although they were poor they still had larger numbers than the more fortunate people living in the towns around them. This made them feel important and it caused a common bond among the residents.

I chose this game for this story because the story is about farming, and this game is about gathering fruit.

Sumery:
The story takes place in the summer of 1963 in south Philadelphia, at New African Baptist Church. The story is about a young girl who’s father is a preacher at a Baptist church, and she’s the only person in her family who’s not Baptized. So all through out the story some people given her a hard time because she does not want to be baptized. Towards the end of the story she gets in to a struggle with her aunt Bessie who is pushing her very strongly to get baptized, but she refuses and gets out of the situation. At the end of the story it said the feather down the road that her father dies and, she never got baptized and, just stopped showing up at the church. But through out the story he close family never gave her a problem the supported her decisions, they loved her no matter what she did.

My responce:

I think that the story was well written, and the message was good. It stated a good point and the massed was clear towards the end. At the end of the book it makes you wonder and think what happens later on, did she ever get baptized, and It leaves you asking your self questions.


Theme:

The theme was 1963 in south Philadelphia at a Baptist church, and the story was a drama. The meaning of the story is “your family will love no matter what decisions you make.”

Summery:

The story “Miriam” is about an Old lady named Mrs. H.T. Miller, an she is a widow who lives alone. She goes out one day to see a movie, and runs in to a little girl who asks her is she can buy her a ticket. Mrs. Miller said yes, and after seeing the movie they went there separate ways, so Mrs. Miller thought. The next day the little girl showed up at her apartment wanting to come in, an so she did. She was acting weird, an was tacking thing and making demands. After she left Mrs. Miller was frightened by this strange little girl. So the next day she shows up again, but this time with a box, and when Mrs. Miller opens the door she barges in and said “I’m moving in with you now.” Mrs. Miller ran down stars and got a man to check on her apartment but when he got their, there was no one in sight. Mrs. Millar began to think that is was all in her head. So she returns to her room, and sees that there is no one in her apartment, but then she herd a voice “hello” said Miriam.

My Responce tourds the story:

I thought that Miriam was a very well written story, because it made you think about who was who, and what was going to happen. The suspense of the little girl showing up and tacking things, and making commands, I thought was creepy. But over the entire story kept me listing and reading all through out.

Theme:

The theme is a old lady that lives by her self in New York, and she begins to suspect she has a mental illness by seeing this random little girl who keeps appearing every were she goes, or is it just some thing else.

I chose this game for this story because the story is scary, filled with suspense, and it’s all a mystery; and this game is scary and filled with mystery.
